Janice (Aimee Bello) is very happy with her boyfriend Steve (Michael Jordan).

However, the only problem is her abusive husband Dave (Brad Egger). Janice

decides to use a bit of "unique" problem solving to get rid of him, but ends up the

lethal target of Dave's black magic practicing mother.

Four months after Janice finally has enough and kills her husband, she's living with

Steve (in the same house where she killed Dave no less) and they're quickly

approaching their one year anniversary.

House Call starts off at a moderate pace and proceeds to rapidly put its foot on the

gas as it progresses. It manages to do this without losing any tension, of which there

is plenty, or at the expense of the story itself. On the contrary, the tension intensifies

ever more and the atmosphere is just terrific!

HOUSE CALL feels like a real movie.The lighting and sound and cinematography blend into something resembling (or, in some cases, exceeding) a professional production!

House Call is both thrilling and creepy from the 1st to the last minute, due to

brilliant pacing, great direction from Erik L. Wilson, plenty of gripping suspense

and an abundance of breathtaking atmosphere.

The acting is outstanding, especially Aimee Bello... what a sexy babe!

The cinematography is visually stunning, the haunting soundtrack is

extremely effective and the editing is absolutely tight.

Director Erik L. Wilson made the decision to film House Calls

with a RED One camera, this gives it a really polish, clean look.

The look of the film is exceptional thanks to the use of Red One cameras. As well as

the use of filters which not a lot of young independent filmmakers use, thus giving

House Call a much more professional look than most new Indie short films!

Excellent camera work, some pretty dynamic cuts, as well as the great

practical effects and what you have is one of the more crisp and visceral

looking horror movies you are ever going to see in 2012!

Highlights: the tremendous opening kill sequence, some intensely gory violence

and a few awesome CGI special effects that really impressed our

entire staff! Hands down, "House Call" is an excellent short movie and a great

way for Director Erik L. Wilson to kick off 2012!

Aimee Bello is sexy Scream Queen in the making and Michael Jordon displays

a great, calm but violent intensity in the later moments of HOUSE CALL.

When things start going to hell and Janice is fighting for survival, Wilson does a

great job of setting pace as well as delivering a few genuinely scary moments.

Special effects are really solid, with makeup artist Tony Wash doing some

great work on a few zombie-ish appliances at the film's climax.

Dave's mother is out for revenge (black magic style) for her son's death

against those who wronged him!

Yet the one part of the film that really stood out was the special effects. The CG during the ritual scene was really well done as was all of the practical or in-camera effects.

Of course, the deceased Dave's Voodoo Momma didn't take to kindly to

her son's death and is out for black magic vengeance!

The short running time(18 min) appropriately whets the appetite, and it certainly has our staff very intrigued in seeing what Director Erik L. Wilson has planned in the future!

HOUSE CALL proves to be a tight, very interesting, and terrific looking short film that

really shows off the talent and fine skills of its cast and crew.

Michael Jordan's performance as Steve that really grabs your attention once he

becomes possessed as his acting goes to a different level than everyone else's!

HOUSE CALL is well directed and smartly acted. It also most

certainly promises better things to come! The music score by Aaron Dlugasch

supports the action exceptionally well, and sound and video specs are top notch.

Even the closing credits are well above average!

Solid performances from the small cast and an atmospheric score... House Call is a

fantastic short movie. Visceral imagery and an eerie atmosphere combine superbly

to create an excellent mood. If you should get the opportunity, we strongly

recommend that you check this short movie out!

Actress Janet Gawrys gets acting honors, though mostly for her

fabulously ragged and believably "witchy" face! The FX team did a great job with

the make-up and physical effects in the final, gross, gory struggle!

As the 2012 horror film-festival circuit starts to build momentum, there’s an Indie

Film production company called Fatal Pictures, comprised of producer/director Richard Powell and producer Zach Green. Their style is a mix of dark drama and sheer fright

that tends to deal with the horrors inside ourselves rather than the world around us.

They are 2 people you should definitely watch out for!

This dynamic duo made their first short, CONSUMPTION, in 2008, and more recently

completed WORM (2010) and FAMILIAR (2012), both starring Robert Nolan. WORM

has been out a little while now, screening at events like The Sydney Underground Film Festival, Dark Bridges Film Festival, Toronto Screamfest and The Horror Society

Film Fest, but expect more play around the country this year, along with FAMILIAR.

Much more of psychological study than a traditional horror film, WORM takes us inside

the mind of high-school teacher Geoffrey Dodd (Robert Nolan), whose inner thoughts

are shared with us in disturbing detail. On the surface, Geoffrey is a seemingly kind,

gentle and sane instructor; as we follow him through the course of an average school

day, we assume he’s just a bitter man having a bad time. But beneath the carefully constructed veneer, something even more sinister is going on in his mind that could

burst at any moment.

Robert Nolan was named best overall actor!

The glue that holds this film together (and FAMILIAR as well) is Nolan’s performance. There could have been a temptation to play the teacher in an overtly sinister way... regarding his students angrily and so on, but the detachment between his thoughts

and actions is so great that it makes the film all the more disturbing. WORM is not

a violent piece; in fact, very little actually happens during the course of Geoffrey’s

day, but it always feels like something is going to happen. This is really a case study

of inner emotional violence that could be set off at any moment into the real thing,

and that is truly horrifying.

In FAMILIAR, Nolan plays John Dodd (no relation that we know of to WORM’s antihero), a middle-aged married man emotionally detached from his wife and the world. If only the pain and existential turmoil that plague us through our lives could be manifested physically so that we could purge it for good.

Despite having what appears to be a loving wife, a well-adjusted teenage daughter and a stable home life, John is falling apart from the inside. It might be a hell of a lot easier than listening to it nagging at the back of our minds, second-guessing our every decision and acting as an introspective foe as it pushes us to act in ways that are seemingly contrary to our nature, but are likely our most honest primal instincts at work.

At first glance, FAMILIAR‘s structure is quite similar to that of WORM... but it is only so on the surface. Once again, we see a man coming unraveled, but this time it results much more in actions than in thoughts.

The film is basically broken into two sections: The first half has a similar structure

to WORM, where we hear what’s going on in John’s mind. As a storyteller, Mr. Powell has done damn fine work here as it's not an easy feat to give viewers 24 minutes of a voice over and not have it become tedious. But in Familiar, it works well... due to Powell's script and partially to the stellar performance by leading man Robert Nolan, whose passive and restrained performance is downright perfection and evokes an uneasy atmosphere from frame one that never waivers.

In fact, it’s best to view the films together if possible, because WORM sets up an

expectation that FAMILIAR will go in the same direction (hence the title), but it doesn't. Harrowing and deeply personal, Familiar is essentially a dark and disturbing journey through a struggling spouse's yearning for freedom that climaxes in a fantastically intense and gory fashion that will leave the gore hounds clapping in glee by the time the credits begin to roll.

After hearing the news that his wife is pregnant with another child, he becomes

convinced that this is a plot by her to destroy his life and contrives to destroy the

unborn child... but then has to deal with a physical monster growing inside him.

The production values are taken up a notch in FAMILIAR as well, thanks to the addition of Michael Jari Davidson as director of photography and the special FX team known as

The Butcher Shop (Ryan Louagie, Carlos Henriques and Steven Dawley). Green and Powell are not offering body-horror for the sake of trying to shock the furred-up palette. The effects disgust, repulse, but when they do it is underscoring and displaying the inner conflict. Every component in Familiar is tight, controlled and focused.

On a cold and snowy day in November 2011, filmmaker Ricardo Islas and his crew ventured into the woods of Illinois to begin filming Frankenstein: Day of the Beast. For several weeks the cast and crew would endure blizzards and freezing temperatures as Islas directed the cabin scenes. The only heat to be had was from the actual fireplace in an authentic historic cabin. The result was incredible. From there the cast and crew traveled to a very old abandoned church in Chicago to film the wedding scene.

With the sunlight shooting rays of light through the stained glass dome ceiling and the priest ready to begin the ceremony, the atmosphere of this church in complete ruble was more than words could describe.

Soon after pictures began to surface and a mini teaser trailer was released, the film company Alpha Studios acquired some funding and began building the main sets in the city of Chicago. Special effects and set design were created by the master of horror John M. Vitiritti. Many of the interior scenes are now complete, including explosions, gunfire, stabbings, dismemberments, etc.

With three quarters of the film shot and enough funds to finish the film, Frankenstein: The Day of the Beast is well on its way to making movie history with a version of Frankenstein that is unlike anything you have ever seen! Seven armed and dangerous mercenary soldiers have been hired to protect her against something huge that hides in the woods, awaiting for that wedding night to be consummated. Victor is the only one who knows the truth about their enemy. His secret will be paid with the life of his private army, whose men will die one by one, as the creature gets closer to his target, the bride.

The only known photograph of Maddy Ulm

It may be of interest to note that the photograph of the girl featured on the cover is not Maddy Ulm. One of the first things I noticed about Miss Ulm upon our first meeting was her striking resemblance to my own daughter, and, as I seem to be in the habit of doing, it is my daughter who poses again for the cover of her father’s book. Miss Ulm flatly refused to be photographed. Even in her own day, she said, she hated being in front of the camera’s “dissecting lens.” There is, however, more than a passing physical resemblance between to the two as this photograph, the only known photograph of Maddy Ulm, will attest to... She told me this photograph was a rather reluctant lighting test taken around 1930 on the set of Dracula.

I asked my nephew Peter who is 12 years old to help me in reviewing this book, since he really enjoyed the 1st volume. Peter really loved this book as well and read it quickly. He said it was a good adventure story with major twists and turns. He didn’t find the book

scary at all. In fact, he thought was a good blend of action and humor. He found the policeman and his cat particularly funny. Peter admired Howard’s bravery and liked

him as a character. However, Peter didn’t want to be friends with Howard because

he is surrounded by people Peter hopes to never meet.

I specifically asked about the art work. Peter thought the art was good & easy to follow.

He liked the colors used in the book. They let the reader know that the book could be

creepy or eerie at times. He especially liked the change of art style when Howard is

given a vision of Azathoth. It really caught his attention.

For myself, I also enjoyed the book and found it a very quick read. Bruce Brown has done a solid job of crafting his own all-ages verison of the Lovecraft universe. Honestly, I didn’t imagine you could do that. I’m happy that kids like my nephew will get some exposure to H.P. I welcomed the change of artists. Thomas Boatwright is a better draftsman, and Howard now has a proper character design. Thankfully, the use of watercolor tones was retained, since it’s one of the aspects of the art I liked from the 1st volume. There’s a lot of use of green in this book, and Peter is right, it does an excellent job setting the proper mood.

I enjoyed the full panel scenes, and the way that the story boards were not just rectilinear predictability, but kept me on my toes. I loved the small homages to many very old movies, or if that was unintended I suppose I'm showing my age and love of old films.

Both Peter and I recommend this book to kids who enjoy a good action-adventure story. It’s been two years since the first volume appeared. I’d like to see another volume come out next year. A volume every other year will only hurt the series. It’s a lot to ask of adults to wait that long, never mind kids. Lovecraft fans should do like I did and order two copies: one to keep and one to pass on to a child reader or to give to your local library.

Arcana has a five-page preview for the book on their website. In this alternate reality, Howard is maybe about 6 years old (his father is still alive) and the mighty sleeping one Cthulhu is named "Spot" by little Howard. The images drawn by Thomas Boatwright are a radical mixture of minimalism, pastels, and abstraction. The writers, Mr. Bruce Brown and Dwight L. McPherson are clever with asides and wit - like one might have in an old "What's Up, Doc" Chuck Jones cartoon. It is not all whimsy, there is also a deadly and Lovecraftian seriousness about this graphic novel. These characters could be killed, or suffer a madness that would be much worse than death. The evil food chain ascends eldritchly upward so that even the devils themselves could be consumed if they fail in their unstated mission.

This is Lovecraft, so there is always a "book". Whether the book is a book, or the book

is a metaphor, it is immediately critical to the plot and the devil's missions. But in this

case, He Who Dreams and Should Not Be Named, is quite tame and kind of sweet.

The world is somehow very wrong, and this little boy, Howard, must somehow make

it right. That's quite a task, if this were really a little boy, but it seems that the boy

is also a paradigm of wisdom and enlightenment. How this plays out is not hinted at

the end of chapter one, but rest assured the next chapters are equally entertaining. However, here are a few hints of the energetic fun and horror in the next chapters.

In chapter three, as a cat lover, I cringed at what might happen to Howard's little
black cat. Then come the "bubbles". Very clever of the artistic maestro to think of
that! Whether the writers or the artists are responsible for the many sound effects,
kudos to each who had a part. I live in the part of the country that has cicadas.
I hate 'em. But I'd take a pack of them before I would that horrid winged thing that attacks our beloved team. (I do believe in spooks, I do, I do!) Then as we close in
on the end of the last chapter, we suddenly understand the title of the graphic novel!

In chapter two a very interesting character appears, one who would be perfect had

he been a real actor in an old Basil Rathbone movie. You may find the character

funny, and eerie, but I found this character one of my favorites. Then Spot gets

himself in well... "a spot". Will he escape in time to save Howard? We wonder if

Howard's father is mad, or is he as sly as a warped Yukon Cornelius? Then before

chapter two ends, some very Innsmouthian manifestations occur. And oh, my,

what they do to good ol' 454 Angell Street!

Bruce Brown and Dwight L. McPherson are masters of writing. E. T. Dollman's lettering is clean, readable, and artistic in its own way. Thomas Boatwright so captivated me, I had to go online and see more. What I saw confirmed what I initially thought: Not only can he do classic illustration, but he has a style all his own. Scenes from CONTACT (2009)

Kipp knows how to draw emotion from his actors, and how to create tension and feelings

of dread by purposefully manipulating what is shown on screen, and what is not.

His black & white movie Contact is about a young woman who breaks free of her

parent's tight reign. In her rebellion she takes a walk down a dangerous path of experimenting with sex & drugs.

The movie's minimalist dialogue creates suspense and mimics the main character's

parent's need for control. The woman's parents demonstrates this clearly in the simplest

of tasks; setting the dining table while waiting for their daughter to return home to

them. The movie starts out with her parents, and makes you wonder just what is

going on that could make them so nervous.

The scene changes to the daughter, and you get to watch her slow descent into

madness as she takes a powerful drug with her partner that makes her hallucinate!

I especially found the drug trip scene to be reminiscent of David Cronenberg's works

and his themes of body horror. In Cronenberg's movies the most horrific things that

can happen to you are the unpredictable things that can happen to your body.

The same can be said of Contact (2009). Once the drugs really start to take effect, and she begins to kiss her boyfriend, their lips meld together. In a panic, she tries to pull back, and their flesh forms a tube between their heads. It's great imagery, and quite shocking to

watch as they rip away their faces in an effort to break free.

Plot Line: After Contact (2009) screened at Sinister Six, we took an alternate route to sending it along the festival circuit. We put it online so everyone could see it, and it caught on with critics and the blog-o-sphere. One reviewer, Russ Penning, enjoyed the movie so much he sent me the script for Crestfallen. It's a project about suicide, and was based on Russ's personal experience. It felt honest and nightmarish, and we knew it was our next project. The lead actress, Deneen Melody, was also drawing from something very personal; one of her close friends committed suicide. We all wanted to make a film that, by the end, was an affirmation of the value of life, no matter how difficult or painful it can be!

Deneen Melody stars in Crestfallen (2011)

This silent short film the story is a beautiful tragedy told by actions; the brilliant music gives the main character her voice. The melancholic soundtrack is punctuated by a small musical idea of a loud strumming guitar accompanied by a snare drum. The way it breaks through the sad soft sound in the background mimics the deep thoughts that are rushing through the main character's head as she attempts to commit suicide. At the end, as her life's blood leaves her, the punctuating beat begins to sound like a rapid heartbeat that is slowly dying.

What I really loved about this short film is that the music tells the story and gives

the character her voice as she attempts to take her life. There is no dialogue; it is

like watching a silent movie, albeit in color instead of black and white.

However the emotional impact is not lost, but enhanced by the silence, the same way that the soundtrack enhances the overall feeling of grief that the main character feels.

The movie shows us what flashes through the suicidal woman's head as she gets ready to take her life. She married, had a child, then caught her husband cheating on her with her best friend. After an ugly confrontation, he takes her child away from her.

Crestfallen (2011) is a serious look at what can drive a person to suicide, and treats the topic

with maturity and respect. I absolutely loved this deep study of heartbreak and pain.

It is a great example of how music can enhance a film and provide emotional impact.

Devastated and heartbroken, she decides to take her life. At the very end, the thoughts of her child brings her to her senses and she doesn't wish to die any more.

- My friends at the Mandragoras Art Space wanted to make an experimental short film with me, and I had become interested in making low-tech horror movies with special effects made from household objects, in this case condiments.
- It's an incredibly simple narrative, meant to provoke something in the viewer. The drool in the movie can stand in for whatever you want: addiction, amniotic fluid, something sexual, something demonic. When you complete a film, it no longer belongs to you; it belongs to the audience.

"The Christmas Party," "The Pod," "Contact" and Crestfallen. His first feature length film "The Sadist" starring Tom Savini is currently in post-production. The final verdict is that he is a fantastic director with a fine eye for detail that allows his works to conjure up strong, deep emotions in the viewer. Not very many directors are able to do that, especially when working with minimalist dialogue, or in the case of Crestfallen, no dialogue at all.

Brief Synopsis: When new parents Alex and Penny retreat from the city and move

into a place outside town, the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their

infant has both of them seeing things in the house that may or may not exist. Persistent sightings of a strange woman has each of them wondering if they are suffering from hallucinations, or if their new home holds a dark, supernatural presence. As their fragile grasp on reality spirals into delirium, Alex and Penny find themselves nearly helpless

April 7, 2011 Makeup Artist ASHLEY WALSH Wraps "Dark Circles"

Makeup Artist, ASHLEY WALSH just completed work as Department Head of Makeup for the thriller Dark Circles, which filmed in Baton Rouge. Dark Circles is an After Dark production and the first horror movie from director Paul Soter. Paul Soter is a member of the infamous Broken Lizard comedy troupe, and is most well known for writing and starring in Super Troopers and Beerfest. Dark Circles stars Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do) and Pell James (The Lincoln Lawyer). Working primarily with Special Effects and Character driven makeup, Ashley Walsh designed and executed all of the makeup in the film.
